Lieutenant General Thomas F. Metz assumed duties as the Deputy Commanding General and Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, on May 24, 2006, after serving as the Commanding General, III Corps and Fort Hood, with duty as Commanding General, Multi-National Corps-Iraq, Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, Iraq.

Lieutenant General Thomas F. Metz, Deputy Commanding General/Chief of Staff for the US Army Training and Doctrine Command in Fort Monroe, Va. visited with Ashe County High School's JROTC Friday and presented awards to several cadets. Metz arrived at the school in a Black Hawk Helicopter around 1 p.m. Metz, a three star general, also toured the school, attended a briefing from the JROTC cadets and met with school personnel.

Military Appreciation Day Sees Huge Turnout; Key Words Were "Thank You"
Even a pouring rain and heavy fog did not keep the National Guard Armory in Jefferson from being packed with veterans, current military personnel, families and friends for the Rotary Club's "Military Appreciation Day" held last Thursday.

Bring out your flags, put on your red, white and blue, and pick up a poppy to wear! No, it is not the official Memorial Day, but the Jeffersons Rotary Club has planned a special day of appreciation and recognition for all Veterans and active Military who live or work in Ashe County.
